Chevrolet is dedicated to building the best cars and trucks in the world, but they are also committed making sure kids stay in school. While it may sound simple, Chevrolet realizes that simple things like attendance really help kids further their education and ensure they graduate.
To back up their belief, Chevrolet donated $27.1 million to the United Way of Southeastern Michigan to help assist with the "Network of Excellence" program which is aimed at increasing local graduation rates.
To improve the program this year Chevrolet and the United Way are turning the attendance program into a challenge to students. The thought is that competition will encourage the students to get competitive in a friendly way and liven up the school day.
As encouragement, the school who wins will get to host an event and have a yet to be named celebrity act at Principal for the day. Chevrolet sees education as important to not only the students, but for the future of Detroit. There is currently a 50% dropout rate. Decreasing that will help students and help Chevrolet as they try to create more jobs for those students in the future.
"We know that attendance effects school performance and is directly linked to graduation rates, which ultimately impacts individual success and quality of life."2
